Photography Collections Assignment Q&A

1. So can you tell us a bit about who you are as a person?

My name is Jason Wu, I am 32 years of age and I live in Burwood. I am a full time general practitioner at a local practice. I have one daughter who is 4 years of age and her name is Mandy. She is so beautiful. (shows picture of Mandy)

  1. When did you start collecting and what inspired you to do so?

I started collecting in 2001 when I turned 18. I was just finishing high school back then and everyone used to make fun of my chopstick collection, so I just told them that if you don’t like chopstick you’re a lunatic. I was inspired to start collecting when I moved into my own house, I didn't have enough money for proper chopsticks, so I started stealing them from take away chinese and noodles restaurants. I realised just how many different shapes, sizes and patterns that were on chopsticks, so I started to collect different types.

  1. How big is your collection

Right now, I have approximately 3,500 chopsticks, which is 1,750 different pairs of chopsticks. And I am still always on the lookout for a new pattern of chopstick that might be released.

  1. Has your collecting caused you any difficulties

Yes, people used to make fun of me for collecting chopsticks but I didn’t really care because I just love chopsticks so much. Another difficulty it has caused me is that my old house was too small for all my chopsticks, so I had to move to a new house with more storage to fit all 1,750 pairs.

  1. Do you have a favourite item?

Yes, I do have a favourite item. My favourite pair of chopsticks is this fine piece of tortoise shell, with a dark brown tint. It has a floral pattern on the head. I hold this pair very close to my heart.

  1. Where do you keep your collection?

I keep my collection here in a draw. I don’t like to display them all very neatly because I like to utilise my chopsticks and eat with them. Here, I can easily and quickly grab a pair of my favourite chopsticks and start eating with them.

  1. Is it therapeutic/ satisfying to have a collection

Yes, I find it therapeutic to be able to organise, sort and display all my chopsticks. There is something about sorting my chopsticks into different types that brings a sense of calm over me

  1. Do you plan on expanding your collection

Yes, I am always looking for more chopsticks I have never seen before to add to my collection. I have a list of my most-wanted chopsticks that I am always desperately trying to find.

  1. Has your collection created any opportunities

Yes, my chopstick collection has given me the opportunity to take part in a photoshoot for Chopsticks Weekly, which is one of the best things that has happened in my life. In this shoot I posed with my chopsticks for an article they were writing on me. This was a very exciting opportunity, and I hope that more opportunities like this are still to come!

Well thank you very much for allowing us to talk to you Jason.

No, thank you very much, this has been great.
