The Moment- Questions

Sample 4:

1. The first things that I notice in the image is a group of people seemingly building a structure made completely out of tree trunks. Then I also notice someone jumping off the top of the structure

2. I think the story is about a group of people in Vanuatu who find fun by bungee jumping off a tall structure.

3. Monica Huban.

4. May 1996

5. The story is about a land-diving ceremony in Vanuatu. A large crowd chants and whistles at the divers. Each diver chooses their own landing base and vines, therefore they are held responsible for any injuries. This particular diver in the photo was the highest jump. The vine snapped, and there was a cracking sound. The man was thought to be paralysed from the waist down.

6. The language used in this is formal. Eg. "Thereby accepting full responsibility..." and "Our regular inquiries about the diver's state of health have drawn differing responses"

7. The story is in past tense and is told in first person. Eg. "My wife and I were attending..."

8. I feel the story has been added to the photo because without the backstory, it would be difficult trying to interpret what is actually happening in the photograph- this is not something which is normal nor familiar to very many people. The story about the highest diver is also very interesting, which we wouldn't have known even if we had known what was going on.

9. The story is of this length as it includes all the essential information needed to understand the story of the picture, but no more or less.

10. This would be a popular feature article as it tells a story from overseas, where something out of the ordinary is taking place. Many people would find this interesting.

Sample 5

1. The first thing I see in this image is many men, on what looks like, on top of a train.

2. I think the story is about people who ride on top of a train for fun.

3. John Maier

4. 1990

5. Teenagers in Rio de Janeiro ride on top of a train for fun. It is very dangerous, with 150 people dying each year. Many also end up in hospital. Some stand up and play air guitar or sing songs.

6. Slang. eg. "some kids were smashed against poles..."

7. Past tense, first person. "I was working..."

8. The story has added to the photo because we can have an idea of just how dangerous this activity is. The story tells us some examples of injuries, and some statistics on deaths.

9. The story is this length as it tells the story with just enough information.

10. Yes, this would be a popular feature article, because people would be very interested to read about teenagers who ride on top of a train, as this is a very intriguing activity.
